Student Placement for the 2019-2020 School Year

April 2, 2019

Dear Brown Families,

It is the time when we begin to think about student placement for the 2019-2020 school year. Staff spend a great deal of time, effort, and energy considering the factors that will help determine the appropriate placement for each child and the best grouping of students within each class. Input will be provided by classroom teachers, specialists, and other school personnel with the intent to do the best we can for each and every child at Brown School.

We are committed to creating balanced classes taking into consideration: the ratio of boys to girls, the range of academic achievement, abilities and interests, and social maturity. We consider a variety of factors in grouping students, including: placing students with at least one peer from this year’s class, separating certain individuals, and placing an assortment of personality types in each class. We consider which students should be placed together because they positively reinforce each other and who should be separated because they may impede one another’s learning. Our goal is to build classes where all students thrive and grow academically and socially.

If you have information to share, please write a BRIEF letter indicating the single most important factor you would like us to consider (examples: learning style, cousins who can/can’t be together, student mismatches, etc.). Writing a letter is voluntary and you can be assured that the same care and consideration will be given to the placement, whether or not a letter is sent. If you are a parent of twins, please indicate in a letter if you would prefer your children to be in the same classroom or separated. All letters are reviewed many times before the class lists are finalized. Send your letter to the office or send an email to Lauren King’s attention no later than Wednesday, May 1st. Letters received after this date will not be considered because our placement process begins right after the deadline.

We will not keep letters from year to year, so any letter written in the past will not be considered for the next year’s placement. Please do not assume that incidents between children will be recalled during the placement process as this is a challenge when so many factors are being considered. It is important to understand that your comments will be shared with teachers after the principals have read them. Lastly, requests for specific teachers cannot be honored.

Please understand that Brown staff cannot take calls or schedule conferences regarding specific placement requests. To do so would compromise the hard work of all involved. As always, let us assure you that we at Brown understand the importance of student placement and will continue to seriously weigh all available information in order to create classes where every student will be happy and successful.

Thank you for your continued support of the processes thoughtfully developed at the Brown!

Best,

Mrs. King and Mr. Throwe
