Less than 30% percent of the 250+ students in this residential neighborhood are bussed to the school. The school houses 17 classrooms with students in pre-school through grade five, which includes two therapeutic special education classrooms. All classrooms are located on the main floor.
The staff consists of 12 regular education teachers, two pre-school teachers and special education classroom teachers. Our reading teacher and mainstream academic teacher collaborate with grade level teams and individual teachers to provide additional academic support for student's, share instructional strategies, plan assessments and review testing data. Additionally, there are 20 + other full-time and part-time staff members. They include: one guidance counselor, one school adjustment counselor, one full time nurse, a secretary, a part-time art, physical education teacher and health teacher. There are also two kindergarten paraprofessionals, special-education paraprofessionals, and a library paraprofessional. Other support personnel include a part-time speech and language pathologist, an occupational therapist, an adaptive physical education teacher and a physical therapist. The West Memorial School also has a part-time instrumental music teacher for grade five band students. Our music and physical education teachers provide enrichment classes for all grade levels as well.
The school community includes a very supportive and active PTO. The PTO raises funds, provides extensive cultural events and plans field trips for all the students. The city-wide Peabody Education Council also provides opportunities for guest readers and awards Best Bet Grants to classroom teachers. The grants are used to provides our student's with further academic enrichment activities.
There is high parent involvement at the West Memorial Elementary School, with parents making themselves available to help run and support the school store, the Scholastic Book Fair and numerous cultural arts programs. Parents assist with many other classroom based academic activities and field trips as well. The Fall Fundraisers, Monster Mash Halloween Dance, Holiday Craft Fair and Spring Musical are four major activities which generate funds for the school and are also run by parent volunteers. Our Grandparents/Elders luncheon, Guest Readers Program and Popcorn and PJ's Day round out our enrichment activities and welcome community members into the school creating a high level of community involvement.
The school building is used extensively for additional extra-curricula student activities including Girl Scouts, Brownies, Daisies, Cub Scouts and Webelos scouting clubs. The Peabody Recreation Department programs and Peabody Basketball Association games offer our student's further opportunities and activities as well. The school also offers before and after school enrichment activities during the year such as Chorus, an art program, girls and boys basketball teams, grade five Math Club, and MCAS Intervention Tutoring in math and english language arts for third, fourth and fifth graders.
